Be Unstoppable In Your Business and Life

If someone told you to be unstoppable in your business and life, what would you say to them?  Would you tell them that you are living up to your potential and you are completely satisfied with both your business life and your personal life.  Maybe you would respond that you know you need to work harder but are pretty happy right now.  Some would respond by asking, “How can I be unstoppable in business and in life?”

The key to being unstoppable is to have momentum.  Momentum is defined as the quantity of motion of a moving object and the impetus gained by a moving object.  In other words, momentum is a state of movement.  Gaining momentum means that you are moving forward and gaining speed as you go.  So how do you create the lasting passion and fulfillment within your career and your life that will keep you moving forward – - the cycle of momentum.

The Cycle of Momentum

Below is the cycle of momentum as it relates to being unstoppable in your business and life.  Once you jump into this cycle, each element will feed into the next to give you motivation to keep moving and accomplishing your goals.

·         Potential – Potential is defined as the capacity to develop into something in the future.  Sometimes potential is referred to as unrealized ability.  You must first accept that within you is the potential to do anything that you desire provided that you are committed to doing whatever it takes to reach your goals.  Potential is also the basic belief that we have in our own abilities.  If you are having trouble believing in yourself, make a list your qualities including everything that you know how to do.  You may be surprised at how many talents you possess.

·         Goals – In order to start moving and keep moving, you must know where you are going.  Moving without any real direction is simply a waste of time and energy.  Therefore, set short-term and long-term goals for your business and personal life.  Having goals helps you remain focused and helps you establish a plan of action that will turn your visions into reality.

·         Action – Potential and goals are useless without action.  Action is the driving force behind momentum.  Having a sound business plan will net you nothing if you do not take actions to put that plan into motion.  As you take steps to reach each of your goals, you will gain momentum and find encouragement through each of your successes.

·         Results – As you continue on the path to reach your goals, each action you take will bring you one step closer to reaching your goals.  The positive results motivate you to continue moving toward the next step.  You feel inspired to use your potential to set new goals and then take action to see results.  The cycle will continue as you keep gaining momentum.

Becoming unstoppable in business and life begins with realizing your potential.  You have it within you to reach your goals but you must first accept that you have the potential.  Visualize what you want in business and in life and then set about creating a plan to turn those visions into reality.

HOW TO LET GO AND HANG ON

“When you’re at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” Maybe not!
What if it’s time to let go?
It takes more wisdom to let go than hang on.
Desperation makes you hang on.
Distress persists.
Despair sets in.
Let go:
During distress you often hang on to what you should let go.
1.    Hope. You hoped to earn the VP slot. But, they brought in an outsider. The longer you hope for that position the more time you’ll waste. I know the COO of a hospital who was passed over twice. She stopped hoping for the position and resolved to do a great job where she was. Eventually, they asked her to become COO.
2.    Hostility. Lashing out at those who let you down is living in the past.
3.    Bitterness. You received less than you deserved. Leaders dedicated to giving more than they take always receive less than they deserve.
When your mind’s set on one thing it can’t consider another. Let go.
Hang on:
1.    Reflection. You reflect too much on others, during distress, and too little on yourself. Reflect on who you are and, more important, who you want to be. Rise to your noble self.
2.    Connection. Connect over the future not the past. Learn from those who have already reached what you’re reaching for. Bitter winds invite you to build barriers.  You may need to rehash disappointments for a while, but don’t stir that pot too long. We all know people who destroyed their future by circling the past.
3.    Action. Any reasonable action is better than crying in your soup. Take a small step toward your future every day. Your future is built by taking action not thinking thoughts.
When you’re up against the wall, stop doing things that got you there.

What can leaders do when they’re at the end of the rope?
Hang On to your believe!

Learning From Pigeons

During an experiment, pigeons were put in cages with one green and one red button.  In one cage, if the birds pecked the green button they would get food every time.  In the other, the green button yielded food erratically and the pigeons had to persist to get enough food.  In both cases, pecking the red button did nothing.  Both sets of birds thrived, learning what they had to do to survive and to ignore the red button that yielded no food.  But when the birds that were used to getting a reward every time were put in the cage that fed them only occasionally, they failed to adapt; they hit their heads against the cage and pecked wildly at everything in sight.
There are two worthwhile lessons from this study.  First, the pigeons quickly learned from experience to avoid the red button because it was unproductive.  There are lots of people who would lead smoother and happier lives if they just stopped pushing red buttons that never give them what they want.
Second, even birds that have it too easy get spoiled and develop an entitlement mentality that prevents them from adapting to situations where they can solve their problems if they just work harder.  Some people are like that too.  They don’t deal well with new circumstances especially those that require persistence.

Part of being responsible is learning from experience to appreciate the benefits of tenacity and the wisdom of avoiding useless, harmful and self-defeating patterns of behavior.
